Two months ago I didn't know layered smoothies existed, but ever since I saw this idea and made my first layered smoothie, a whole new world possibilities has opened up!

The whole idea of layered smoothies is that these are not only pretty to look at, but they are a fun way to get even more variety of fruits and veggies into your smoothies - because there are only so many different ingredients you can put in one smoothie without it tasting weird.  Plus (at least for me), the separation of the two different smoothie flavors makes it seem like there's more smoothie which is more filling.

So for my first layered smoothie, I decided to go with a mango smoothie base and green smoothie with apple on top because the colors are pretty (orange on the bottom and green on top!) and they are both packed with different nutrients that compliment each other well.

The mango smoothie provides a good source of vitamin A (great for vision and immunity), fiber, and vitamin C from the mango, plus protein and calcium from the Greek yogurt.  The green smoothie has even more fiber and vitamin C coming from the apple and greens, but also contains the folate, iron, and lots of antioxidants, which are important disease-fighting compounds found in most fruits and veggies, but especially the very bright or deeply colored ones.

This is also the kind of food that will give your body a boost of natural energy without having to rely on multiple cups of coffee or extra sugar that won't give you lasting energy to feel great all day.  There's an option to use brewed green tea in the green smoothie recipe which does contain a little caffeine, but it actually works really well to boost and balance energy when combined with the fruit and veggies here.  All flavor going on in these smoothies will wake up both you and your taste buds!

Mango and Green-Apple Layered Smoothie

Makes 2 servings

For the mango smoothie:

  • 1 cup chopped fresh mango (can also use frozen)
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2-3 ice cubes

For the green smoothie

  • 1/2 cup apple, chopped
  • 1/2 banana
  • 2 handfuls baby spinach (about 2 cups)
  • 1 cup water or brewed green tea (cooled)
  • 1 teaspoon honey (optional)

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients for the mango smoothie in a blender and blend at least one minute or until the ingredients are completely combined and the smoothie is creamy.  Pour the mango smoothie into two glasses (half in each glass).
  2. Repeat the process to make the green smoothie, then pour half of the green smoothie over the mango smoothie in each glass.  You can also make the green smoothie first and pour it on the bottom and the mango smoothie on top.

 Happy Eating!
